“I know” said Faramir. “You wished Lord Aragorn’s love. For he was noble and powerful… But when you only recieved understanding and pity, you wanted nothing more, but a glorious death in battle. Éowyn look at me!”
Éowyn looked at Faramir without blinking, and Faramir said:
“Do not scorn pity, which is the gift of a genesous heart, Éowyn! But I do not offer you my pity. For you are a noble lady and brave and you have conquered a glory that will never be forgoten; and you are so beautiful that even the words of the elvish tongue couldn’t describe you, and I love you. There was a time when I pitied your sadness. But now, even if you had no sorrow at all, nor fear… and you were the blessed Queen of Gondor, I would still love you. Éowyn, do you not love me?…”
“This is Minas Arnor, The Sun Tower” she said, “and behold! The Shadow has vanished!… I will be a healer, and will love everything that grows, everything that may not be arid.” And she looked at Faramir once again. “I no longer wish to be a Queen” she said.
Then Faramir laughed happily, “That sounds good to me” he said ”because I am not a king. And I will marry the White Lady of Rohan, if she accepts… we will cross the River and in happier days live in the beautiful Ithilien and we will cultivate a garden. And in it everything will grow with happiness…”
